La Concha Motel

IMG_2168

Designed by one of my favorite architects, Paul Williams, the La Concha Motel opened on Las Vegas Blvd in 1961 with this memorable googie-style neon sign beckoning in travelers.

Originally located at 2955 S Las Vegas Blvd, the motel closed in 2004, and was saved from demolition and oblivion when The Neon Museum relocated the lobby and the iconic neon sign to it’s new location five miles away.

The best of 2019 – Blue Angels @ Miramar

SANL3638-1.jpg

One of the most spectacular sights I saw this year was the annual MCAS Miramar Air Show in San Diego.  In its 64th year, the event covers three days of aerial displays, including the Blue Angels pictured here. If we weren’t looking up at the skies, we toured static displays of dozens of vintage and modern aircraft from military, firefighting, search & rescue, law enforcement, as well as special interest private aviation.

It’s not easy getting a decent picture of screaming jets flying past at nearly 400 mph (640 km/h)!

This was our first trip to see the show and loved it.  We’ll be back next year!
