I received this 1987 Beijing International Marathon Finishers Medallion as a thank you gift from the Chinese Athletic Assn. after three Chinese runners competed in Long Beach Marathon on May 1, 1988.
The Long Beach, California event included a race within the race for the Pacific Rim marathon championship, with 20 athletes competing from China, Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines, New Zealand, Singapore, Japan and South Korea.
My team had created and hosted a reception for VIPs and sponsors along the finish line of the event. Our guests and championship athletes had a terrific time and presented this as a thank you by the team from China.
It was the first time Chinese runners had competed in a marathon on U.S. soil, making this memento of the day very special to me.
