Carl G. Bray – Smoke Tree Painter

I’ve been driving past this sign on Highway 111 in Indian Wells, California for many years and finally decided to stop and get a closer look to see what it was all about.

Carl Bray was a famous desert landscape painter and helped support many aspiring artists dating back to the 1930s. He and his family lived in his hand-built home on this site for decades.

“Isn’t it delicious?”

On September 15, 1954 photographer Sam Shaw shot an image of his friend Marilyn Monroe on Lexington Avenue between 52nd and 53rd Street in New York City.

On August 10, 2021 I made this photo of Marilyn posing on a lonely street in front of the Palm Springs Art Museum in Palm Springs, California.

The Pink Elephant of Rancho Mirage, California.

The Rancho Super Car Wash, better known as the “Elephant Car Wash” opened in 1966 along Highway 111 in the tony town of Rancho Mirage near Palm Springs.

The monument was designed by legendary neon artist Beatrice Haverfield of Seattle for a chain of car washes in Washington State. While there are still about 14 Elephant Car Washes in Washington State, only a few examples of Bea’s original sign remain.

Villa Riviera. circa 1929. Long Beach, California

Situated along the shoreline of Long Beach, California, the 16-story Villa Riviera has been one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks since its completion in 1929.

Designed by architect Richard D. King, the 130-unit building, recognizable for its roof of oxidized green copper, is based on the Chateauesque architecture style, inspired by the French chateaus of the 16th century in the Loire Valley of France.

The Pacific Tower to the south of Villa Riviera sits on the site of the legendary Pacific Coast Club, which mimicked a 14th Century French castle and was torn down in 1980s to make way for the current building.

Catalina Ski Race 2021

This past weekend marked my first visit to the race in 24 years!

The thrill of watching the world’s best water skiers make the round-trip from Long Beach Harbor to Catalina Island… and back non-stop… is as exciting as ever. What a treat to see it again.

These are a few fav snaps I took at the race this year. If you’re ever in Long Beach – or Catalina Island when the annual race takes place, be sure to check it out!
