Nicholas Galanin’s “Never Forget,” his massive 44-foot-tall sign exhibited at DesertX 2021, is inspired by the original “Hollywoodland” sign built in 1923 that still stands in Los Angeles today as the infamous “Hollywood” sign.
“Jackrabbit Homestead” by Kim Stringfellow at DesertX 2021 is an art installation on display that explores the legacy of the Small Tract Act in California’s Morongo Basin region near Joshua Tree National Park.
Located near Palm Springs, her recreation of a 122 sq foot cabin built from a kit was not uncommon among homesteaders in the 1950s.

The gardens at the historic Sunnylands Center in Rancho Mirage, California reopened recently for visits. It was nice to dust off the camera and find a few new views to photograph on a recent trip to Palm Springs.

I’ve always wanted to see these jet-powered remote controlled airplanes in-person, and I finally got the chance this weekend at the Coachella Valley Jet Jam 2021 held in Southern California.
And, I was totally amazed and in awe by the passion and aerobatic skills of the remote pilots, and the level of sophistication of their aircraft. Here’s just a sampling of the pictures I made over the weekend, none which do justice to the thrills, sounds, and excitement of the sport.
My favorite time to photograph the Coachella Valley when I visit this time of year is past sunset and the blue hour, just before night time grips the desert.
